Cologne/Köln

I just had a bit over half an hour free in Köln, and was amazed to find the following two things:

1. The famous Cathedral is on the doorstep of the train station (the huge 'Dom' vs. the nasty sixties station frontage makes for quite a contrast).

2. The best value coffee is from Starbucks (and if the normal standard of German coffee is anything to go by, the best tasting too).

Now that I'm on the train, whizzing along the spectacular River Rhine, I was also amazed to find that in Germany, if your train is late and you have a connecting train later, you can ask to go on another train, even if your ticket is tied to a particular train. This is absolutely not the case in the UK, and particularly infuriating when regularly spaced lines are delayed such that every train is offset by the same delay - it just makes no sense! Just one more thing that the Germans beat the UK on (but there are some exceptions, which might the subject of a future post one day).
